Background of the Study
Metaphors serve as powerful cognitive tools that shape perceptions and facilitate complex ideas in everyday language. In Nigerian English, especially within urban professional settings in Abuja, metaphorical semantics play a significant role in framing professional discourse and identity. Urban professionals often employ metaphors to articulate abstract concepts, negotiate social realities, and navigate corporate communication challenges (Eze, 2023). This figurative language enriches communication by connecting new ideas with familiar experiences, thereby fostering clearer understanding in fast-paced environments. However, the creative use of metaphors also introduces layers of ambiguity that can complicate professional interactions, especially in multicultural settings where interpretations may vary. The dual nature of metaphorical semantics—enhancing expressiveness while potentially obfuscating meaning—calls for a systematic investigation into its usage among Abuja’s urban professionals. Recent studies indicate that while metaphorical language contributes to innovative thinking and persuasive communication, it also demands a shared cultural understanding to be effective (Uche, 2024). This study explores how metaphorical semantics are constructed, employed, and interpreted within Nigerian English in a professional context, aiming to elucidate both its cognitive benefits and communicative challenges.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the creative potential of metaphorical semantics, its usage among urban professionals in Abuja often leads to semantic ambiguities that may hinder effective communication. The reliance on culturally loaded metaphors can result in varied interpretations, particularly in a diverse professional environment (Eze, 2023). This ambiguity poses challenges in achieving precise and unambiguous professional discourse, which is critical in high-stakes business and governmental communications. Additionally, the rapid evolution of language in urban centers may outpace the shared cultural understanding necessary for metaphors to function optimally. The need to reconcile the creative benefits of metaphorical language with its potential for misinterpretation underscores the importance of investigating its impact on communication efficiency and clarity (Uche, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to investigating metaphorical semantics in Nigerian English as used by urban professionals in Abuja. It does not extend to other linguistic phenomena or regions.
